What
kind of student issues can I refer to the Office of the
Dean of Students?
The Office of the Dean of Students supports students in
answering questions, solving problems and in coping with
the unexpected emergencies of life that affect their academic
performance. Faculty and staff are encouraged to refer
students to the Office of the Dean of Students if they
notice anything of concern about a particular student,
i.e. the student’s grades drop dramatically, the
student appears to be having personal or family issues,
etc. While our office does not expect you to serve as
a counselor to students, we do request your assistance
in ensuring that students in need are noticed and receive
assistance. The staff in the ODOS often coaches students
on resolving conflicts with fellow students and faculty
and provides intervention if necessary. Please see the
Office of the Dean
of Students: About Us for more specific information
on programs and services.
Where can I refer a student
who may have or think they may have a disability?
Georgia Tech has an office dedicated to making reasonable
accommodations in and out of the classroom environment
for students with disabilities. ADAPTS operates under
the guidelines of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973 and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA). ADAPTS serves any Georgia Tech student who
has a documented, qualifying disability. For more information
regarding services for students with disabilities, see
the ADAPTS
website at http://adapts.gatech.edu
What can I do if I have
not seen a student for a while and I think that he or
she may be missing?
Contact the Office of the Dean of Students at (404)894-6367 or your department chairperson and let us assist
you.
Who can I contact for
assistance with a diversity dilemma (racism, harassment,
etc.)
Contact Stephanie Ray, Associate Dean of Students and
Director of Diversity Issues and Programs at (404)894-2561.
I think that a student
may have an alcohol or substance abuse problem. Where
can I refer them for help?
The Dean of Students can meet with the student and encourage
a substance abuse evaluation and appropriate referrals
to professionals who can help.
How do I handle classroom
disruptions?
While the primary responsibility for managing the classroom
environment rests with the instructor; students who
engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result
in disruption of a class may be directed by the instructor
to leave the class for the remainder of the class period.
Longer suspensions from a class or dismissal from the
Institute on disciplinary grounds must be administered
by the Dean of Students in accordance with the Code
of Student Conduct. Information of the Code of Student
Conduct and assistance with Academic Integrity Issues
can be found at the Office of Student Integrity website.
If a student appears to be a threat to self or others,
contact Campus Police at (404)894-2500 immediately.
As a faculty member why
would I be called in a student judicial matter?
It may be an academic integrity matter that the student
reported to us, rather than coming through you, or it
may be a non-academic matter in which we think you may
have observed issues in the classroom or elsewhere,
which may be helpful related information for us.
