What if I have a family emergency and need to miss a class?
The Office of the Dean of Students can provide support to students who have a serious personal or family emergency or severe illness or injury - by notifying professors of their absences from class. We would need documentation that would verify this information, i.e. letter/fax from your doctor. Our fax number is (404) 894-9928. Please fill out the General Intake Form.

In the case that an emergency requires your complete attention and you will not be able to return to school for an extended period of time, you should notify the Dean of Students by filling out the General Intake Form. We can contact all your professors, so that you can focus on your personal needs. Upon your return to school, you should get in touch with each professor to complete any work missed. You may also want to contact the Counseling Center at (404) 894-2575 for additional assistance.

How do I withdraw from school?
If you are withdrawing before the deadline, then simply go on line to drop all your classes. Easy instructions are provided at www.registrar.gatech.edu/students/withdrawal.php. Please note if you wish to return to school the next term you must submit a “Petition to the Faculty” form. If you are withdrawing for medical or personal reasons, the Dean of Students can help you by working with housing and other campus units. If you want to withdraw from school after the deadline, you must Petition the faculty. Our Office can also assist you with this process.

I saw someone cheat in my class. What do I do?
We encourage you to confront the student yourself. If you are not comfortable doing that, you should contact the faculty member for the course and let them know what you observed. If you are unsure about reporting or just want to talk with someone in confidence contact the Honor Advisor Council and talk to a fellow student. They can be reached at www.honor.gatech.edu.

I feel disconnected on campus. I’m not sure I belong at Tech. Where can I find assistance?
You may want to consider joining a student organization. Try visiting www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu. You may also want to stop by the Counseling Center - www.counseling.gatech.edu to learn about their services and programs including groups on relationships and making conversation.

I need a class excuse. What do I do?
The Office of the Dean of Students can provide support to students who have a serious personal or family emergency or severe illness or injury - by notifying professors of their absences from class. We would need documentation, i.e. letter/fax from your doctor, or hospital, that would verify this information. The Office of the Dean of Students is not involved in routine matters such as short-term illness, doctor appointments, wedding attendance, jury duty, job interviews, and the like. Students, who are absent for such reasons, should contact the faculty member directly. Any decision to excuse a student from class will be at the discretion of the faculty member. The Dean of Students can help a student with class excuses for documented medical and personal reasons. Please fill out the General Intake Form.

How can I see a Dean?

What do I do if I am having problems with a professor?
First try talking to the professor. If you don't feel like the situation is resolved, contact the department chair. If you need coaching on how to talk to either the faculty member or the department chair, make an appointment with a Dean.

How do I get a Dean’s Certification or recommendation form/letter?
Take the form to the Registrar's Office. Allow for a minimum two week processing time.

I have been dropped/dismissed for academic reasons. What do I do next?
Talk first to your major school advisor. Most departments have a minimum number of terms you must sit out. It is different for every major. Readmission requires approval from your major school and the Undergraduate/Graduate Curriculum Committee. For procedures on readmission visit: Readmission Policy.

I’m worried that I’m failing a class. How can I receive help?
Ask for help from your professor or TA. You can also get tutoring in the Freshman Experience, Success Programs and OMED. Try visiting these sites: www.successprograms.gatech.edu, www.omed.gatech.edu, or www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu.

Where can I go to get ideas about community service?
You can go to www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/move to find out about volunteer opportunities on and off campus.

I’m having difficulty making contact with a faculty member. What do I do?
Go to the faculty member’s office during his or her office hours. If you have not had success in doing this, contact them by e-mail. Follow-up by e-mail again. Next try contacting the academic department to see if they can help you locate the professor.

How do I get an excused absence if my student organization is traveling to a conference?
Requests for student organization excused absences must be made no later than two weeks prior to the date of the event. No late requests will be honored. Advisors, please send an e-mail with the name of the group, name and dates of the event - with the first and last name of the students with their Student ID #'s that start with a 9. to Nicole Cotton at: nicole.cotton@vpss.gatech.edu . Or fax the information to 404-894-9928.

I haven’t been to class in three days. What do I do?

A loved one passes away. What are my options?
Please notify your professors about your absences. You will need documentation, either a funeral home notice, an obituary from the paper, or a death certificate. Upon your return back to campus, you should get in touch with each professor to complete any work missed. You may also want to contact the Counseling Center at (404)894-2575 for personal issues relating to the death of a loved one. If this is an emergency situation, and you need to leave immediately and are not able to get out notices to your professors, Please fill out the General Intake Form.

I think I have a disability. What is my next step?
The ADAPTS(Access Disabled Assistance Program for Tech Students) assists students in arranging for academic, residential, and extracurricular accommodations. Contact them at (404)894-2561 or at www.adapts.gatech.edu.

How do I get involved in a student organization?
Visit www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu for information about the over 200 student clubs and organizations on campus. If you find one that interest you contact the president or membership chair and chat with them about the group, then attend a meeting. You might want to "shop around" before choosing a group so you can make an informed decision.

How do I start a student organization?
The process for starting a student organization begins with a visit to the Student Organizations Advisor, located upstairs in the Student Center Commons. How do I start a new fraternity/sorority?
The process for starting a fraternity or sorority begins with a visit to the Coordinator for Greek Affairs, located in the Student Services Building, Room 141. You will be given advice on process, paper work, and how to be an effective group. For more information go to Dean of Students:Activities and Leadership:Greek Affairs.

I’m interested in Diversity Training Opportunities. Where do I go?
Workshops and training opportunities are offered to students and student groups free of charge. Students can register for workshops or that can request that one be tailor made to cater to their organizational needs.

Where can I get information about leadership opportunities?
Leadership opportunities abound at Tech. Visit Dean of Students:Activities and Leadership:Leadership Opportunities.

What are my responsibilities as an off-campus student?
Remember that you are Tech student first. Be a responsible community member, respect neighbors,and follow community's expectations. You can pick up a brochure about Off-Campus living in the GT SMART Office in the Student Services Building, Room 123.

What does the GT Community expect of me as a student?
Georgia Tech has an academic and non-academic conduct code, it can be found at www.deanofstudents.gatech.edu/policies_responsibilities/index.html.

How does alcohol use affect learning and quality of life?
Alcohol can have an impact on your performance as a student and your quality of life at Tech, both directly and indirectly. To learn more go to Dean of Students:Support Services:Managing Alcohol Risk.

What are the laws/policies around alcohol?
Georgia law requires that in order to possess, purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages you must be 21. Did you also know that in Georgia it is a felony to use a fake I.D.? Georgia Tech has specific policies concerning alcohol on campus. Go to www.deanofstudents.gatech.edu/policies_responsibilities/index.html.

What is our policy on Sexual Harassment/Misconduct?
Sexual Harassment or any other form of sexual misconduct is not tolerated at Tech. If you have been a victim, report the incident to the Dean of Students. If you are unsure if you want to make a formal complaint, you can discuss the issue with a Dean or with a staff member in the Women's Resource Center to get advice. Georgia Tech's policy on sexual harassment is found at www.sexualassault.gatech.edu/GT_policy.htm.

I think I need legal services. Can I obtain free legal assistance?
The Student Government Association provides a service where attorneys from the Atlanta area volunteer their time to provide free legal advice to students. You may call (404)894-2814 for an appointment.

How do I find out what is happening in Atlanta?
Visit www.cyberbuzz.com for the Student Guide to Atlanta. On the 2nd floor of the Student Center, is an information desk. Here students can get discounted tickets to various places, maps of campus, maps of Atlanta, and information on what there is to do in Atlanta.

How can I find out about off-campus living opportunities?
Georgia Tech Housing has a list of owners/leasers that work with students at http://www.housing.gatech.edu/assignments/general off-campus.cfm. All students are responsible for their own lease and rental agreements.

Where can I find an Accessible Map?
An online campus map can be found at gtalumni.org/campusmap/ or a paper map can be found on the 2nd floor of the Student Center at the Information Desk.

I have been feeling really down, and I have been sleeping a lot. What should I do?
Make an appointment with the Counseling Center at (404)894-2575. If you think you may be feeling so bad that you have considered harming yourself, tell them that you need an appointment immediately. Counseling is free and completely confidential.

I think I have been sexually assaulted, what do I do?
If you think you have been assaulted, seek help. There are a couple of options that you can explore at "Personal Issues Page" and information is provided at www.sexualassault.gatech.edu/help_now.htm.

I have an eating disorder, is there anything I can do?
Call the Georgia Tech Counseling Center at (404)894-2575. You can get more information at Eating-Disorders

I think I am gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender. Where can I get support or information?
Tech has a student organization called Pride Alliance; more information can be found at www.cyberbuzz.gatech.edu, www.diversity.gatech.edu.
