Recruitment

New members are an integral part of any organization. They bring new ideas, enthusiasm, and a fresh perspective to your groups. With all of the organization on campus, competition is strong for new members.

Before you can begin to recruit successfully, you must evaluate your organization. All of the current members should understand the mission of the organization before you can recruit. Unsuccessful recruitment usually occurs because all the members of the organization are not on the same page as to what the organization's goals/ activities are.

Secondly you should figure out whom you are targeting. Freshmen? Graduate / transfer students? All students? Are there certain majors? Keep this profile in mind when you are designing your advertising/ promotional campaigns.

Think about what your organization has to offer. Are you a social club? Do you perform al lot of community service? Do you offer the potential to network? This should also be included in your promotional materials

Lastly, you are going to want to examine which channel or channels listed below you want to use to get the message to potential members.

  • Advertise in the Technique- Let students know that you are looking for new members and what type of organization you are.
  • Use the CyberBuzz Calendar- Post your application period and when you might be doing interviews or an open house.
  • Posters/ Flyers- This is the most cost effective way to get people's attention. Use brightly colored paper and bold lettering. Be sure to gain the proper permission for hanging posters on campus and in residence halls.
  • Letters to other campus organizations- Sometimes the beat way to find new members is to look within other organizations for talented members. By sending a letter to the presidents of other organizations, asking them to announce your organization, you might find a future leader.
  • Letters to departments- Sometimes graduate students on campus are overlooked. By sending letters to departments, you can find someone who would not only be a good member, but might also be an excellent resource.
  • The Internet- Post information on your website about upcoming recruitment dates.
  • Word of mouth- Sometimes the best way to locate new members is by using your current membership to recruit. Have them announce dates in their classes or other clubs. Spread the word through the residence and dining halls.
